By Joanna Chambreau

Winter 2016

Crackling log fires, warm cosy blankets, hot chocolate and warm apple cider on a cold crisp evening. These are typical heart-warming images that we get when we think of Christmas and the Holiday Season. Each family creates their own traditions and memories and we love the nostalgia that we get to re-experience every year.

The sights, sounds and smells of Christmastime trigger those pleasant memories that we grew up with which are deeply embedded into our limbic system. But let’s not forget that sometimes the season can also be stressful. Gift shopping in over-crowded malls, cooking a large family meal, the kid’s brand new toys not working on Christmas morning.

In this article, I will suggest essential oils that are perfect for the Holiday Season. Oils that will create those amazing sensations, calm thoughts and feelings that speak of Christmas. I have also give recipes for some amazing diffuser blends for you to try at home.

Diffusing the essential oils in a COOL MIST DIFFUSER is my recommended method for application during the holiday season for the following reasons:

  • The aroma will spread quickly throughout your home, thus creating an holiday ambience.

  • The essential oils will also help to purify the air and eliminate odours - perfect for when you have visitors.

  • Some of the oils, such as cinnamon, clove and ginger are “hot” oils so applying them to your skin may cause sensitivity. Therefore by using them in a diffuser you will not have to apply them onto or near your skin.

  • You will receive still receive the wellness benefits from the essential oils.

  • Diffusing is safe for using the oils around children and pets.

Cypress - Derived from the branches of the tall evergreen tree, Cypress essential oil has a fresh, clean aroma that’s energizing and refreshing. It will remind you a glorious woodland walk on Christmas morning. The aroma is described as Clean, fresh, woody, and herbaceous.

Holiday Blend - Fill your home with the inviting scent of Holiday essential oil blend. The warm, sweet aroma creates a welcoming environment for holiday gatherings and can be diffused every day to purify the air and uplift the spirit. This proprietary blend combines Wild Orange, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Clove with the fresh and airy scent of Siberian and Douglas Fir, creating an essential oil blend that will become a Christmas tradition. This is a ready made blend - ask me how to order.

Cinnamon Bark - There is no doubt Cinnamon is one of the most popular scents for the Holiday Season. It has a long history of culinary uses, adding spice to desserts, entrees, and hot drinks. Extracted from bark, Cinnamon oil contains strong cleansing and immune support properties.

Cassia - A close relative to Cinnamon, Cassia has a strong, spicy aroma that can be used in small quantities to transform any essential oil blend. Cassia can be used in cooking either as a replacement for Cinnamon in pies and breads or by itself in a myriad of entrees and desserts.

Clove - Another popular spice for the Holiday Season. Clove is very spicy, warm, woody with subnote of leather. As a cooking spice, Clove adds a spicy flavor to any dish or dessert while providing internal health benefits. Clove is a very stimulating and energizing essential oil that can be used as a warming massage oil when combined with Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Ginger - A hot, fragrant flavour, ginger is popular in Asian cuisine, however for the Holidays we enjoy this spice in hot drinks, cakes, and of course - gingerbread and ginger snaps! Ginger is best known as a digestive aid and for helping to ease occasional indigestion and nausea.

Douglas Fir - Douglas Fir is a conifer that grows natively throughout North America. This tall, evergreen fir tree is frequently used in the Christmas tree industry and has a lemonscented note that’s sweet and refreshing. Douglas Fir can also be used to purify the skin and promote a positive mood. Blending Douglas Fir with citrus oils will create an uplifting environment while freshening the air.

Peppermint - The peppermint plant is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint and was first described by Carl Linneaus in 1753. This aroma reminds us of candy canes! It increases alertness and promotes clearer breathing.
